FAQ

Why isn't there more crowdfunding sites such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter for filmmakers?

Crowdfunding is a great way to connect with potential investors.

Most filmmakers don’t believe they have the right to ask for money. They feel they need someone else who can vouch for them.

And since they haven't proven themselves yet, they don't think anyone should invest in them.

Instead, they spend many months working on the project in hopes that someone will notice.

Then, when they launch the campaign, they realize how poorly prepared they were.

Instead of thousands of dollar, they get a handful of donations.

Is Hollywood making more from international sales than domestic?

Yes, but only slightly. 2017 foreign revenue accounted for approximately 17%. 83% of domestic revenues were generated in 2017.

In fact, overseas markets account for over half of the world's population.

Many people will want to see your movie even though they may not have the opportunity to watch it at home.

How many theaters are necessary to make my investment back?

It depends on how long you plan to run your theatrical release.

One theater is sufficient if you intend to screen your film for less time than two weeks.

Two theaters are required if your film will be shown for more than two weeks.

Why is Hollywood calling it Hollywood?

D.W. Griffith created the first movie industry in California in 1887. It was named after Los Angeles, at the time known as Hollywood.

Because it was an exciting area to visit, the name stuck. People would travel all the way from other countries to see what was happening.

Hollywood is still an integral part of American culture. We have movies. There are also music videos. Commercials. They are all called Hollywood.

How much does it take to distribute a feature?

A typical distribution deal costs between $100,000-$150,000.

The average cost of a theater is approximately $10,000

The average cost per screen is around $5,000.

If you have 100 screens, your distribution fee will be about $500,000.

Distributor fees of $50,000 would apply if there are ten screens.

How To

How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF is located in Los Angeles at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. There are currently 1,922 living persons listed on the HWOF.

You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. A bronze plaque with your name inscribed on it is also included. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.

If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.

The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.

Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due is dependent on the number of years since you were first recognized. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.

You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove you from the list.

How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?

To be nominated, one must be at least 18 years. A person must be present at the time of receiving a star. After receiving a Star, one can still be Nominated for another star after ten Years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

A family member can nominate your name for a star. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.

Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?

The HWOF was not created to be a historical landmark. It is meant as a memorial to all who contributed to the history of film.

What happened the star thefts? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
