FAQ

How much does Hollywood make per year?

Producing a movie can cost around $100 million. So if you made ten movies a year for a decade, you'd have enough money to buy a small country.

A private island with an airport and power plant, as well as a bank, post office and police station, would be yours.

If this sounds like it's not fun, then you might be insane.

Why are so few independent films ever distributed?

Indie filmmakers often assume that distributors will pick up their films.

Because they are confident that the public will love their film, they believe distributors would be willing to buy it.

However, this is rarely the case. Distributors often use independent filmmakers.

They use tactics such as delaying a film's release date until after awards season has ended.

They also delay the release date for a low-budget film until the summer blockbuster movie season has begun.

Distributors may also keep films from the public until people have already spent hundreds of money on tickets, popcorn or candy.

They don't wish to lose those profits.

Why isn't there more crowdfunding sites such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter for filmmakers?

Crowdfunding sites can be great as they let you reach out to potential investors.

However, most filmmakers do not believe they are qualified to request money. They feel they must have someone to speak for them.

Because they are still in their infancy, they do not believe that anyone should invest.

Instead, they spend long hours working on their project, in hopes of someone noticing.

Then they realize that they didn't properly prepare for the launch of their campaign.

Instead of receiving thousands of dollars, they receive a few donations.

How much of the box office revenue goes to marketing budgets

Marketing budgets usually account for anywhere from 20%-40% of a film's budget. This is because marketing plays a vital role in any film's success.

Without marketing, nobody will know anything about your film. It is impossible to get people to pay for your film without knowing all about it.

How To

How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It has 2,711 stars embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. The HWOF currently has 1,922 listed living people.

To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.

You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they decide to approve, they write a letter to the address of the applicant explaining their decision. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce will then pay $25. This money is forwarded to the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles.

The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays artists or organizations whose applications were accepted. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.

Once the artist has received his/her star, he/she becomes eligible to be included in the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.

You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove your name from this list.

What age is required to become a HWOF star?

One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. After receiving a Star, one can still be Nominated for another star after ten Years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

A family member can nominate your name for a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.

Why can't people choose to use a different street than having stars all over the place?

The HWOF does not intend to be a historical monument. It honors those who made history through film.

What happened with the stars that were stolen? The thieves took approximately 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250 and 300 lbs. This makes it approximately 4 tons!
