How To

How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF is located in Los Angeles at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It consists of 2,711 stars embedded into the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.

You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.

You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". The nominations are evaluated by a committee, which then decides whether or not to approve them. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a check payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which sends the check to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.

Once the artist has received his/her star, he/she becomes eligible to be included in the HWOF. To be eligible for the HWOF, the artist must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce any balance. The amount due is dependent on the number of years since you were first recognized. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.

You will need to contact Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be removed from the HWOF. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.

How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?

Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. To receive a star, one must be alive at that time. A star can be renominated after 10 years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

You can be nominated by your family members to receive a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.

Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?

The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It honors those who made history through film.

What happened with the stars that were stolen? Around 1,200 stars were taken by the thieves. Each star weighs between 250 and 300 lbs. This makes it approximately 4 tons!
