How To
How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF is located in Los Angeles at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.
You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you have been approved, you will be given a certificate that shows your name and details, including date of birth, place of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with your name inscribed on it is also included. This plaque is affixed to a concrete base in front of the designated star.
You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.
The department issues the Hollywood Chamber of commerce a check, payable to it. The check is sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce pays half of the $12.50 fee to the artist or organization. The other half goes to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. To be listed on the HWOF, you must pay the remaining balance owed to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.
If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.
How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?
To be nominated, one must be at least 18 years. To receive a star, one must be alive at that time. A star can be renominated after 10 years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
Your family members can nominate you for a star. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.
Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?
The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It is meant to honor those who contributed to film history.
What happened to all the stars stolen? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
