How To
How to get a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 1960 established the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.
You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.
If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee evaluates the nominations and decides whether to approve them. If they decide to approve, they write a letter to the address of the applicant explaining their decision. The person who accepts the nomination will receive a second confirmation letter. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce then sends $25 to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the application submitted by the artist or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.
After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. To be listed on the HWOF, you must pay the remaining balance owed to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.
You will need to contact Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be removed from the HWOF. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.
What age is required to become a HWOF star?
One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To receive a star, one must be alive at that time. A star can be renominated after 10 years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
You can be nominated by your family members to receive a star. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.
Why can't people choose to use a different street than having stars all over the place?
The HWOF is not meant to be a historical monument. It is meant to honor those who contributed to film history.
What happened to all the stars stolen? The thieves stole around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250 and 300 lbs. This makes it approximately 4 tons!
