How To

How to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce established the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. The HWOF is located in Los Angeles at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.

You must first submit your name and address to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to become a member of HWOF. The Hollywood Department of Cultural Affairs then submits your information to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.

If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they do, they will send a letter explaining their decision to the applicant at his/her home address. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the artist or organization whose application was accepted. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.

Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. To be eligible to list on the HWOF you will need to pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce all outstanding balance. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. You would owe $15,000. If you were first Nominated in 1990, for example. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.

If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will remove you from the list.

How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?

To be nominated, one must be at least 18 years. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. A star can be renominated after 10 years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Nominating you can be done by family members. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce can place a memorial marker next to the star, if there aren't any living relatives.

Why not just have stars on every street?

The HWOF is not meant to be a historical monument. It is meant to honor those who contributed to film history.
